Indonesia is home to one of the most valuable and sought-after spices in the world: vanilla. Often referred to as “Green Gold,” vanilla thrives in fertile regions such as Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Papua, and Nusa Tenggara. Thanks to traditional cultivation and post-harvest techniques, Indonesian vanilla is known for its rich aroma and high vanillin content, which contribute to its distinctive flavor.
Growing vanilla is no easy task. Each orchid flower must be hand-pollinated within a narrow window of time, and the beans take up to nine months to mature. Once harvested, they undergo a careful drying and fermentation process that can last several months. This meticulous effort adds to the spice’s premium value on the global market.
Despite its reputation, Indonesia still holds a relatively small share of the global vanilla export market. While it is the second-largest vanilla producer after Madagascar, its export contribution remains limited. In 2020, Indonesia accounted for around 30 percent of global production but only about 2.6 percent of total exports. Nevertheless, the trend is changing. By 2022, the value of Indonesia’s vanilla exports had reached approximately 117 million US dollars, growing by nearly 33 percent compared to the previous year.
There is growing demand worldwide for high-quality and organic vanilla, offering promising opportunities for Indonesian farmers and exporters. In Lombok, for instance, organically grown vanilla is increasingly favored by global buyers and can command prices up to three times higher than conventional varieties. However, many local producers still face challenges including unstable pricing, long production cycles, and limited access to premium markets.
To compete globally, Indonesia must focus on improving quality, ensuring traceability, and diversifying its vanilla products. This includes offering vanilla in the form of extracts, powder, or paste, as well as obtaining international certifications like organic or fair-trade labeling. These steps will not only boost export value but also help position Indonesia as a leading supplier of premium vanilla to the world.
For those in the industry who are ready to invest in sustainability, quality, and innovation, Indonesian vanilla presents a remarkable opportunity. With the right strategy, this green gold could soon become one of the country’s most iconic export commodities.
